Vietnam’s August Inflation Fastest in More Than a Year: Gov’t Data

Consumer prices in Vietnam picked up considerably in August, driven by food and foodstuffs prices.

Vietnam’s consumer price index (CPI) in August increased 0.92% from a month earlier, the strongest rise in at least more than one year, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).
Prices of ten out of 11 commodities and services categories went up in the month. Medicine and healthcare service prices posted the strongest growth of 2.86% month-on-month as 17 provinces and cities raised service prices for non-insured patients.
While transport prices saw their prices up 2.13% due to two fuel price hikes last month, food and eating-out prices rose 1.06%, driven by an increase of 1.64% in food prices, including pork and vegetables.
The average CPI increased 3.84% year-on-year in the first eight months of this year. The gauge in August edged up 1.23% from December 2016 and 3.35% from a year earlier, the government-run office said.
The office added that core inflation in August came in at 0.1% from July and 1.31% from August last year.
The gold index in August increased 1.11% from the previous month while the USD index slid 0.03%. These two indexes are not included in the basket for CPI calculation.
