Airport infastructure overloading is one of the biggest challenges of Vietnam’s tourism and airline industry.

Problems Arise When 22 Vietnamese Airports Do Not Operate Equally to One Singapore Airport
22 Vietnamese airports has the capacity equal to one airport of Thailand, Singapore and infastructure congestion are posing challenges to not just airline industry but also the tourism industry, those was the information given in the today’s High Level Travel & Tourism Summit 2019 in Marriot Hotel.
Airport infastructure overloading is one of the biggest challenges of Vietnam’s tourism and airline industry. Nguyen Trung Khanh, director general of the Việt Nam Tourism Administration, revealed that among the more than 16 millions of foreign tourists to Vietnam, 80% of them go by airplanes.
In the first 11 months of 2019, Vietnam welcomed more than 16.5 millions of foreign tourists, recording the growth rate of more than 15% compared to the same period last year and got the growth rate of 34% compared to the previous months. Vietnam has recorded the very high growth rates compared to regional countries and countries around the world.
In domestic market, the number of domestic tourists is more than 65 millions. And the target of Vietnam tourism in 2019 is to welcome more than 18 millions of tourists. The growth of tourists globally is estimated to be about 4%, Asia about 5% and South East Asia 6%, the growth rate of tourists to Vietnam is very high.
The main problem now is most of the key airports in key markets like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Nha Trang are always congested, in many cases, supply can not meet the demand.
Luong Hoai Nam, an airline expert, said that it was certain that the airports were congested. He stressed to the details that Vietnam has 22 airports but the total capacity is just equal to Changi Airport in Singapore, Suvarnabhumi in Bangkok – Thailand and international airport in Kuala Lumpur – Malaysia.
Admiting this fact, Deputy Director General of Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, Vo Huy Cuong, added that the most congested airport now is Tan Son Nhat airport. Even the access to the airport are very stuck. Thus the development and expansion of the sattelite airports are necessary but the policies still can not meet up and not encouraging companies to invest.
CEO of ATR, Stefano Bortoli, said that is it necessary to maximize the capacity of the current airports by using many ATR airplanes, those airplanes are very energy saving and very little investment.
Deputy Director General of Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, Vo Huy Cuong supported this idea. He said that Vietnam should find ways to use the best of current infastructure. 4 international airports of Vietnam are congested but for the rest, Vietnam still has the chance to better use the infastructures.
