President Donald J. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will travel to Vietnam to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in November, the White House has said in an announcement.
Vietnam is one of the five stops during President Trump’s tour to China on November 3-14, in addition to Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam, and the Philippines.
The U.S. president will participate in a series of bilateral, multilateral, and cultural engagements - including the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, to be held in Vietnam, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit, to be held in the Philippines, demonstrating his continued commitment to the alliances and partnerships of the United States in the region, according to the statement.
He will also emphasize the importance of fair and reciprocal economic ties with America's trade partners.
“The President's engagements will strengthen the international resolve to confront the North Korean threat and ensure the complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula,” the White House noted.
On the sidelines of the U.N.’s General Assembly in New York on September 22, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh and U.S. Under Secretary of State Thomas Shannon discussed President Trump’s upcoming visit to Vietnam.
At a weekly press meeting on September 21, the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang said that the two countries were actively preparing for the visit.
The APEC summit week will take place in Da Nang city on November 6-11, with the expected participation of leaders from 21 countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
