German companies are interested in investing in a wide range of fields including electronics, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, refinery, clean energy and waste management in Vietnam, government officials told BizLIVE in a recent visit to Vietnam.
Iris Gleicke, Parliamentary State Secretary at Federal Republic of Germany Ministry for Economic Affairs & Energy, said German companies are keen to invest in the energy and environmental treatment areas.
“We have enterprises experienced in treating waste, waste water and slag released by thermoelectric plants. These are the fields that Vietnam needs to develop and offer room for cooperation between the two countries,” she said.
Vietnam’s strong economic growth over the past years has awakened interest from German firms, Gleicke said, noting that historic bonds between Eastern Germany and the Southeast Asian country also serve as a catalyst for their cooperation.
Peter Alltschekow, managing director of the Eastern German Office of the Germany Trade and Invest (GTAI), told BizLIVE that companies from the European country were seeking to invest in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, electronics, refinery and clean energy in Vietnam, the sectors that have great potential for growth.
With the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) coming into force soon, Germany businesses will flock to Vietnam to increase the local input ratio to meet the requirement for origin, Alltschekow added.
Germany is one of Vietnam’s largest trade partners in the EU, with bilateral trade reaching over $10 billion last year.
The European country had invested $1.36 billion in in 275 projects in Vietnam as of end-2016, ranking fifth among EU countries and 20th among nations and territories investing in Vietnam.
