Foreign Purchase of Vietnam Securities Jumps 6-fold in 11 Months

Vietnam's stock market is one of the best performers in the world this year.

Foreign investors net purchased $1.77 billion worth of Vietnamese securities in the 11 months through November, up six-fold from the same period last year, indicating the appeal of the fastest-growing stock market in Asia, according to a government report.
In November alone, they net spent $405 million to acquire shares but net sold $62 million in bonds, resulting in a net buying value of $343 million in the month, the National Financial Supervisory Commission has said in a monthly report.
The value of foreigners’ securities portfolios reached $32.5 billion at the end of last month, rising 59% from end-2016, as they grabbed large-cap stocks, the report added.
Accordingly, the share of foreign traders on the equity market hit 19.7% and that of the bond market stood at 5.3%.
The local stock market has become more open to foreign investors thanks to the expanding size, the government’s ongoing reforms and its policies to support the private sector, the commission said.
“It is necessary to continue accelerating the equitization and divestment process and listings of large-size enterprises in order to attract more foreign indirect investment in the context of favorable developments of the capital market,” it proposed.
