Japanese consumer goods group Lion has stepped into Southeast Asia's fast-growing eye care market this month through in Vietnam, with an eye to join other regional markets later, the Nikkei Asian Review reported.
The group will bringing into Vietnamese its Eyemiru brand of eye drops, which is said to be effective in treating eye fatigue. Eye wash will follow suit later.
The products will be sold at around 8,000 locations, mostly drugstores in urban areas, through a Ho Chi Minh City-based distributor.
Production is being outsourced to a Japanese company that exports the products to Vietnam while Lion will play up the fact that they are made in Japan.
After eye drops, Lion will consider offering cooling gel pads and other goods as well. The Japanese company aims to grow its Vietnamese business to $9.22 million by 2022.
Besides Vietnam, South Korea and Taiwan are two other overseas markets where Lion eye drops are available.
Rising health awareness has contributed to a double-digit growth rate of the Vietnamese eye drop market, which is now valued at some $37 million, according to Lion.
Rohto Pharmaceutical, another Japanese player, is also well-known for its eye-care products in Vietnam.
